Marshall is a film that follows a young Thurgood Marshall as the first African American Associate Justice of the Supreme Court who served from 1967 to 1991. Marshall’s role during his early career was to be a travelling lawyer with the purpose of representing and defending people of color who were wrongfully accused of crimes based on their racial prejudice. The movie picks up with one of his early cases where he is defending a black man who has been accused of raping a white woman. This is one of the more common accusations against African American men during this time period. The case took place in 1940, in Connecticut, known as the State of Connecticut v. Joseph Spell. Marshall visits this case in high drama fashion as it unravels the incidents, confronts the truth, and reaches a verdict. Check this movie out to get a glimpse into our past and see how the weaponization of race can play itself out.
