Beyond Racial Gridlock
By George Yancey
In his book, Beyond Racial Gridlock, George Yancey addresses the racial issues and tensions that have plagued America since its conception. For some, racial strife seems to flare up out of nowhere, but Yancey helps give handles to a topic that seems to ebb and flow with the years by helping his readers see that the effects that race and racism have on us is not in the absence or ignorance of racism, but rather a worldview by which we see racism.
Yancey highlights four world views that may be helpful in identifying where we are on the scale. Two that are more palatable for majority culture (colorblindness and Anglo-conformity) and two that are more palatable for minority culture (multiculturalism and white responsibility). He goes on to address the negatives and positives of each worldview and culminates in offering a fifth worldview that he believes is the answer for his Christian readers. Yancey provides a practical way to self-examine and reimagine the way we think and operate in a racialized society.
